Three Hares Market Garden is entering its third year of growing organic produce at our small farm in the Chew Valley. We are going to be ramping up production, and so we are excited to announce the following two roles in organic horticulture for the 2024 growing season.

We are currently recruiting for two roles:

Seasonal Grower for 2024

Job Description

The seasonal grower will work in all aspects of the organic growing operation at Three Hares Market Garden. This includes: raising seedlings, bed preparation, planting out plugs, mechanical weed control, harvesting and delivering produce. The majority of the week will be spent growing veg, but we will also be raising cut flowers. The seasonal grower will work alongside the head veg grower, the flower grower and the intern grower in all aspects of the operation. The working week will look like this:

The working week

Tuesdays: 9am to 5pm

Wednesdays: 6am to 3.30pm

Fridays: 8.30am to 4.30pm

On Wednesdays, (and Fridays in the latter part of the season), the seasonal growers will spend the last hour of the days work delivering produce.

The job begins the first week in April, and runs until the end of October, or possibly later in the season if funds are available. It is possible that hours may vary slightly seasonally.

Required characteristics

  • Desire to work hard and develop skills in organic horticulture

  • At least two seasons experience in organic horticulture

  • Access to a vehicle, ebike or bicycle with which to assist with deliveries

  • Ability to work independently and as a group

  • A passion for agroecology and a better food system

Desirable characteristics

  • Qualification in horticulture and/or agriculture

  • Tractor experience

Pay

£11.44 p/ hour for a working week of 24 hours, which totals £274.56 p/week. This is in line with minimum wage legislation as of April 2024. The work is self employed and you will be responsible for declaring this work to HMRC. We will have 2 half hour breaks in the day, a morning break and a lunch break. You get paid for one of these breaks.

Internship in organic growing 2024

Job Description

The intern will work alongside the head grower, flower grower and seasonal grower in all aspects of the organic growing operation at Three Hares Market Garden. The tasks will include: raising seedlings, bed preparation, planting out plugs, mechanical weed control, harvesting and delivering produce. The majority of the week will be spent growing veg, but we will also be raising cut flowers.. On a Tuesday morning the intern and the head grower will start the week with a field walk and discussion of the weeks’ priorities. This is a practical way to develop a working understanding of a market garden operation.

Required characteristics

  • Desire to work hard and develop skills in organic horticulture

  • Access to a vehicle, ebike or bicycle with which to assist with deliveries if necessary at the busiest points of the season

Pay

The internship includes one paid day, and one days voluntary work in exchange for market garden produce. The pay is £11.44 p/ hour for a working week of 9 hours, which totals £102.60 p/week. The work is self employed and you will be responsible for declaring the work to HMRC. We will have 2 breaks in the day, a morning break and a lunch break, these will total 1 hour.
